Hello everyone! Well, I’m finally getting around to having an open house for Haven Midwifery. It only took 2 months! Better late than never, right? If you or anyone you know would like to stop by and see my clinic and/or meet ME, there will be a party going on Sunday, June 30th from 3-7 pm at 1401 6th St. Bellingham, WA 98225. There will be food, cake, a guy with a ukulele, possible circus acrobatics, free stuff and oh yeah, tours! Hope you can make it!

Ski to Sea 2013

Family team and cheerleaders

It’s that time of year again! The biggest event in Bellingham is here, the Ski to Sea! I just love this weekend because to me, it signifies that summer days are nearly here, therefore, we have survived another gloomy, damp winter in the Pacific Northwest.  I also love the Ski to Sea because it shows off all of Bellingham’s beauty- in its natural surroundings and its people. This event makes me proud to be from Bellingham.

Ever since I can remember my parents have done the Ski to Sea, and almost always the running leg. As a child, I remember being loaded into our big 15 passenger van in the early morning and cheering our parents on as they charged down Mt. Baker. Several years ago, my father started the tradition of putting together a family team. And we are pretty good (thanks to my sister marrying an amazing skier from Canada)! I have done the kayak, road bike and running leg over the years and every leg has been quite the challenge. Half-way through the legs, I have always asked myself, “Why? Why did I sign up for this…again?!” And it kind of reminds me of women in labor with their second, third, fourth etc who ask themselves, “Why did I think having another baby was a good idea?!” But then, they have their baby and the amnesia kicks in and then they are saying, “…that wasn’t so bad.” Because clearly, the discomfort they went through was worth it. Just like the discomfort of doing the Ski to Sea is worth it. Being a part of something greater than yourself is always a powerful experience ( whether it’s birthing your child or doing a leg in the Ski to Sea).

So this year, the family team  is called Haven Midwifery in honor of my midwifery practice opening this month. Woo-hoo! Thank you to my family for supporting me in this endeavor (and for cooperating long enough to get a descent photo). See you at the finish line!

The Business of Being Born

On Thursday, May 30th at 6:00pm myself and another midwife, Naomi Bjorgan will be showing the documentary, The Business of Being Born at the Lynden Library. This documentary, directed by Abby Epstein and produced by Ricki Lake (yes, the talk-show host turned birth advocate), explores the contemporary experience of childbirth in the United States. Watch the trailer below to get a better idea of what this documentary is about:

Naomi and I will answer any questions people may have following the documentary. We hope to see you there!

Mother’s Day

Hello! Welcome to Haven Midwifery and my first official post. What other day would be more appropriate to start off my blog posts than Mother’s Day! If it weren’t for my mom, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I think most people can say that about their moms as well. Moms are amazing. Period. They give up their bodies to grow you and then endure the most intense experience ever to birth you and then they still have the heart to take care of you for…well, forever! And not just provide the basics for you but also the emotional support and unconditional love that shapes you into the human being that you are. As a midwife, I have the honor of seeing women blossom into mothers over and over again and the transformation is beautiful. Absolutely amazing. The moment when a mother first holds her baby and they gaze into each others eyes, is to me, the best part of being a midwife.

My mom birthed 5 children and adopted another. She was fortunate enough to have a husband (my dad) who was a physician and caught all 6 of us! Though we were all born in the hospital, my mom always did it natural and my dad supported her in this decision. I do not know how my mom raised us hooligans but she did and always with patience and stead-fast love. So cheers, mom! THANK YOU for growing me, birthing me and caring for me every day since I entered this world. And to all you other mothers out there, my deepest respect to you for stepping into the selfless act of motherhood with such beauty and grace.
